Second day of the Slovenian President’s visit to Israel

Klikni za poveèavoOn the second day of his visit to Israel, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Danilo Türk, had a meeting with the Prime Minister of the State of Israel, Ehud Olmert, then received the Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tzipi Livni, and visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust History Museum devoted to the victims of the holocaust and the Israeli National Museum in Jerusalem.

With the Israeli Prime Minister, Mr Olmert, the Slovenian President, Dr Türk, discussed bilateral relations between the Republic of Slovenia and the State of Israel, relations between Israel and the European Union, and the Middle East peace process. The two statesmen agreed that there had been significant progress in Slovenian and Israeli relations and pointed out the opportunity for further development, particularly in economic, educational and scientific fields. The Slovenian President and the Israeli Prime Minister also evaluated the development of relations between Israel and the European Union as successful. They emphasised that the European Union is becoming an increasingly important factor in efforts to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East, a situation which creates new expectations concerning its role both in the political process and in the strengthening of economic and administrative aspects of the Palestinian administration.

Klikni za poveèavoThe Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms Livni, gave Dr Türk a detailed presentation of the course of negotiations with the Palestinian Administration, including the issues of borders, security and ensuring the economic future of the West Bank. They also discussed the efforts to establish a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip currently being undertaken with the help of Egyptian mediation and talked about the future of this region. Ms Livni also outlined Israel’s proposals on upgrading the present forms of cooperation between Israel and the European Union.

Together with the Slovenian delegation, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Danilo Türk, visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust History Museum near Jerusalem, where he laid a wreath in memory of the victims of the holocaust during a special remembrance ceremony. This evening the Slovenian President will participate in the Presidential Conference ‘Facing Tomorrow’, which will be hosted by the Israeli President, Mr Shimon Peres, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel.
