Slovenian President meets Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas

In Sharm el Sheikh today, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Danilo Türk, had a meeting with the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, with whom he exchanged views on the current situation in the Middle East and progress in the peace process. Both expressed their hope that the peace process would continue despite the serious obstacles emerging on the Palestinian territories. Dr Türk and Mr Abbas assessed the European Union contribution to the peace efforts so far as positive and expressed their belief that EU input would, in future, be further strengthened, gain in scope - particularly in the political area - and become even more high-profile. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas accepted with pleasure an invitation from President Türk to visit the Republic of Slovenia.

Later in the day, the Slovenian President is to meet the European Union Special Envoy for the Middle East, Ambassador Marc Otte, and the UN High Representative for the Alliance of Civilisations, Jorge Sampaio.
