President Türk concludes his state visit to Italy

President of the Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, offers a farewell to the Slovenian President, Dr Danilo Türk, with military honours (photo: Stanko Gruden/STA)On the last day of their state visit to the Italian Republic, President Dr Danilo Türk and his wife Barbara Mikliè Türk attended a farewell ceremony with military honours at which they parted from the President of the Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, and his wife Clio Napolitano.

The two assessed political relations between Italy and Slovenia as very good. The visit of President Türk to Lombardy, which constitutes the economic heart of Italy, was focused on concrete economic projects intended to upgrade the existing good bilateral relations. Among the areas of interest to both Slovenia and Lombardy due to their geographical position, President Türk mentioned infrastructure and the energy industry. President Türk also stressed the advantages of Slovenia as the junction of the Mediterranean, Central European and Balkan regions, which offers numerous opportunities for developing cooperation in these two fields.

The Slovenian Minister of Transport, Patrick Vlaèiè, also took part in the discussion, presenting Slovenia's plans in the field of infrastructure. He stressed that construction of the Slovenian motorway framework had been completed and that Slovenia prepared to make major investments in railway infrastructure. The representatives of Koper Port and Slovenian Railways presented opportunities for development of cooperation with Italian partners.

President Türk then met with the Mayor of Milan, Letizia Moratti for discussions, and entered his name in the Golden Guestbook of Milan.
The Slovenian President, Dr Danilo Türk, meets the President of the Milan region, Guido Podestá (photo: Stanko Gruden/STA)Dr Türk concluded his state visit to the Italian Republic by meeting Guido Podestà, the President of the Milan region, the most economically developed area of Italy where as much as a tenth of the Italian gross national product is generated. President Podestà presented to President Türk an outline of the region's economy, especially its energy industry, where the maximum variety of energy sources is sought. They also discussed the construction of the South Stream pipeline and possibilities of cooperating in this project, which is very important for both sides. The two expressed their satisfaction with the fact that a major business conference would be held on 19 May in Ljubljana. It will be attended by Italian business representatives, many of them from the Milan region.
