Ljubljana, 23.2.2008  |  press release

Dr Danilo Türk, President of the Republic of Slovenia, conveyed his deep condolences on the decease of the former Slovenian President, Dr Janez Drnovšek. His statement to the press is published here in full:

“I am deeply moved by the news that serious illness has taken from us Dr Janez Drnovšek, the former President of the Republic of Slovenia. Dr Drnovšek was respected and admired in Slovenia as a wise statesman, an open-minded person with a broad outlook, a successful Prime Minister and President of the Republic and someone who invested his skills and talents in working for common progress and for the well-being of the citizens of Slovenia. He made an outstanding contribution and he will remain in our hearts as a true leader. His efforts significantly helped to consolidate Slovenia’s world reputation.

I knew Janez Drnovšek very well personally and I had the great honour of working with him on shared diplomatic missions for our country and in deliberations on its future. The memory of his work stays with me as a model of sober reflection which gave weight to his statements.

At this sad moment I would like to express my profound and sincere condolences to all the closest members of his family. To the citizens of Slovenia I announce my intent to try to pursue work worthy of the heritage of Dr Janez Drnovšek.”

This afternoon Dr Danilo Türk, President of the Republic of Slovenia, was the first to sign the Book of Condolences for the late Dr Janez Drnovšek, former President of the Republic of Slovenia.
