Klikni za poveèavoThe President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Danilo Türk, this afternoon received the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Belgium, Mr Yves Leterme. The two statesmen discussed several issues in the context of the activities of the European Union, in particular with regard to the preparations for the June European Council meeting.

The Belgian Prime Minister especially emphasised the wish of the Kingdom of Belgium that, in the preparations for the implementation of the Lisbon Treaty, matters should be carefully thought through, and, in relation to the elections of a President of the European Council in the new system envisaged by the Lisbon Treaty, criteria should be established for the selection of the candidates for this post. Dr Danilo Türk found this idea interesting and advocated that the selection procedure be conducted in such a way as to guarantee that the selected candidates enjoy the maximum legitimacy and authority. The Slovenian President and the Belgium Prime Minister also touched upon the Millennium Development Goals, environment and energy issues, and particularly the issue of Kosovo, the latter being one of the most important items on the agenda of the European Union.
