According to President Türk, the UN is a global security organisation which should provide a framework for cooperation between all other organisations. In his words, the majority of today’s global challenges relate to issues beyond NATO’s traditional area. Consequently, such cooperation, as well as cooperation with other regional organisations, is required.

Dr Türk and Mr Rasmussen raised the issue of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the arrangements to present the country’s NATO Membership Action Plan as soon as possible. They also touched upon the situation in Afghanistan. President Türk stressed that the road in Afghanistan must come to an end. According to President Türk, Afghanistan belongs to the Afghan people and solutions should be found to finally enable the Afghan armed forces to assure Afghanistan’s safety and allow all foreign troops to withdraw from the country.
