Bush, visiting Europe for the last time in his capacity as US President. Both Presidents agreed that relations between the two countries were very good and advocated enhancing cooperation, particularly in the economic area.

During their talk, the Slovenian President and his American counterpart touched on certain fundamental issues, such as the common transatlantic values that form the bond between Europe and the United States. They agreed that additional efforts needed to be invested in the development of democracy and protection of human rights in the world. In that respect, they touched on the issue of the US military base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba and discussed the activities which would lead to its closure.

Dr Türk and Mr Bush also addressed the problem of energy and global warming, and the need to develop alternative and more ambitious approaches, potentially based on new technologies. The Presidents continued their talk by exchanging views on various international crises, particularly the situation in the Middle East. They advocated effective action by the Middle East Quartet (the EU, UN, USA and Russia) and the continuation of negotiations with a view to establishing a Palestinian State this year.

The two Presidents also discussed several other subjects, including the state of affairs in Cuba, Columbia and Venezuela.
