President Türk Calls to Preserve the Slovenian Theatre in Trieste

Strasbourg, 1.10.2009  |  press release

The President of Slovenia, Dr Danilo Türk, has assessed relations between Slovenia and Italy. In response to a question from an Italian journalist he stressed that relations between Slovenia and Italy are very good. However, there are some outstanding issues, including the closing of the Slovenian Permanent Theatre in Trieste.

According to the President, the theatre "is very special, since it performs the function of bringing two cultures, the Italian and the Slovenian, closer together; it is a great pity that the theatre did not succeed in obtaining funds to enable it to continue its work."

Dr Turk further stressed the urgent need for funding: "I would like to take this opportunity to invite the Government of the Italian Republic to find the necessary funds, which are relatively modest, and thus enable the Slovenian Permanent Theatre in Trieste to survive."
