Slovenia and Qatar provide joint humanitarian aid to Libya

Ljubljana, 28.10.2011  |  press release

A group of 28 persons with disabilities, all of whom are victims of the armed conflicts in Libya, will arrive in Slovenia today for rehabilitation. Patients will be provided with rehabilitation services at the University Rehabilitation Institute of the Republic of Slovenia (SOČA) and Laško Thermal Spa (Zdravilišče Laško). This constitutes the first phase in the humanitarian aid project for Libya agreed between the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Danilo Türk, and the Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, on the occasion of the September session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

They are personally deeply committed to the project and have often been in touch to discuss it recently. A team of medical professionals from the Slovenian University Rehabilitation Institute and the Qatar medical team departed for Misrata on Tuesday. The two teams first performed triage of 50 persons and examined the situation in the field. An action plan will be drawn up after their return. The establishment of a rehabilitation centre for disabled persons in Misrata during the second phase of the project is scheduled for November.

While the Libyan authorities endeavour to establish legitimate and democratic governance and introduce the rule of law, such external humanitarian aid is of the utmost importance. The Republic of Slovenia, which has already provided a limited amount of humanitarian aid to Libya, is taking an ever-growing role in these international efforts, through its work on the rehabilitation centre and rehabilitation services for disabled persons in Slovenia.
