President voices his support for Slovenians in Italy
Ljubljana, 10.4.2009 | press release
The President of the Republic of Slovenia has been following with interest developments concerning the Slovenian minority in neighbouring Italy. The President of the Republic considers a public meeting organised by the Slovenian Club from Trieste and the National Association of Venezia Giulia and Dalmatia, under the auspices of the newspapers Primorski dnevnik and Il Piccolo, to be one of the activities that have contributed to dialogue and a lessening of political tensions between ‘esuli’ (the exiled) and Slovenians in Italy.
Although memories of the past differ, joint historical research should continue. It is the responsibility of politicians to refrain from using historical memory for political purposes.
The President of the Republic will continue to support all activities aimed at building mutual trust and contributing to good neighbourly relations between the two friendly states.
