The President at the opening of the World Rowing Championship

As honorary sponsor, the President of the Republic, Dr Danilo Türk, attended the opening ceremony of the World Rowing Championship Bled 2011, where he was also a major speaker. He emphasized that the championship is an important event for rowing in Slovenia, contributing to international sports and strengthening bonds between nations worldwide. According to the President, this is also an opportunity to express competitive performance and sporting values.

"To date, Bled has hosted three world championships – in 1966, 1979 and 1989. Each of them was a grand event, unforgettable for the public and primarily for new, young generations of athletes. The Bled lake, the location of this year's world championship, is our pride on account of its natural beauty, and in view of the fact that it represents the only natural rowing course that can ensure equal conditions for all competitors ," said the President.

He then reminded that Slovenians are particularly attached to this sport, as the independent Slovenia won its first Olympic gold medal in rowing. In other words, rowing represents the most successful sport in terms of the number of medals won by Slovene sportsmen at the Olympic Games and world championships. In addition, the President pointed out that the world championship of disabled persons will be an integral part of the world rowing championship. He added that this fact reflects Slovenia's efforts towards a society ensuring dignity and justice for all.

The President concluded his address by thanking the organizing committee, volunteers and all those involved in the organization of the championship. He wished the athletes great sport achievements and visitors a lot of pleasure when witnessing the world championship.
