Their discussion focused on the legislation that the Estonian parliament adopted between 2008 and 2010, when Estonia was faced with the most critical period of the economic crisis, and on Estonia’s experience of the quest for political consensus for the implementation of reforms. During the talks the two presidents pointed out that Estonia now boasts increasingly favourable economic indicators.

On this occasion, President Türk said that the structural problems facing both countries are very similar, and that measures taken by Estonia might serve as a model for Slovenia. They focused particularly on pension reforms and on education as a basis for the implementation of urgent structural reforms. In their words the long-term success of the reforms cannot be counted on without good education, where they stressed the importance of technical intelligentsia. The talks also covered Slovenia’s experience of the presidency of the EU.
