President Türk Invites Presidents of Neighbouring Countries to Attend 20th Anniversary Ceremony

The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr. Danilo Türk, chairing a meeting of the Honorary Committee for the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Slovenia (photo: Daniel Novakoviè/STA)Upon the invitation of Dr. Danilo Türk, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, the President of the Federal Republic of Austria, Dr. Heinz Fischer and his wife Margit Fischer; the President of the Italian Republic, Mr. Giorgio Napolitano; the President of the Republic of Croatia, Dr. Ivo Josipoviĉ and his wife Dr. Tatjana Josipoviĉ; and the President of the Republic of Hungary, Dr. Pál Schmitt, confirmed their attendance at the celebration to commemorate the Day of Slovenian Statehood, and the 20th anniversary of Slovenia’s independence on 24 June 2011.

In his press release after today’s meeting of the Honorary Committee for the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Slovenia, President Türk stressed that the attendance of the presidents of all four of Slovenia's neighbours symbolized the respect which Slovenia enjoys among their neighbouring countries and in the world. According to the President, this is an important message to be communicated on the occasion of 20 years of Slovenia's independence. President Türk also stressed that Slovenia is today a successful country that is strongly anchored in the international community and one that is embracing the future with self-confidence.

The President pointed out that events will be held all across Slovenia. The programme of events also includes schools, with an aim to evoke patriotism and an awareness of life in an independent state among Slovenia’s youth, and as well about army and police veteran associations that represented our joint efforts at the time of the war for independence.
