Discussion concerning the Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea project

The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Danilo Türk, organised a discussion on the project entitled 'The Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea' in the area of the former Isonzo Front, which was attended by representatives of the Walks of Peace in the Soèa Region Foundation and other organisations participating in the project.

The participants remembered today's anniversary of the armistice at the end of the First World War, an important historic event that ended the first major catastrophe of the 20th century, the consequences of which are still felt today.

The discussion focused on specific projects regarding the establishment of the Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea. The project is aimed at linking together and presenting the battlefields of the Isonzo Front in the Upper Soèa Valley, the Gori¹ka region and Karst all the way to Duino, which are today connected into the Walk of Peace in the Upper Soèa Valley, the Sabotin Peace Park, cross-border Walks of Peace in the Karst region, the Great War Theme Park in Monfalcone, and other institutions and monuments related to the First World War.

The walk, which is about 230 km long, also connects natural and other cultural and historical sites, and tourist spots. The front line, once separating the nations of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and the Kingdom of Italy, today provides an opportunity for cooperation and joint efforts for lasting peace among nations.

The participants devoted special attention to activities for the implementation of the project in the Karst region, also pointing out the cooperation of border municipalities. They informed President Türk of the erection of the sculpture, made by Mirsad Begiæ, honouring the Bosnians who fought on the Isonzo Front, scheduled for the end of November in Log pod Mangartom. They agreed to hold another meeting in spring next year.
