Dr Türk and the EU’s High Representative for the common foreign and security policy, Javier Solana, also discussed other international issues, such as the situation in the Middle East and in South America, and other issues related to the European Union.

In a statement to the press, Javier Solana stressed that the violence in Kosovo was pointless and invited all the parties able to influence the situation to do what they could to moderate the present state of affairs. Slovenian President of the Republic, Dr Danilo Türk, expressed his hope that the violence would not spread. At the same time he stressed that he expected everyone in a position to help stabilise the situation in Kosovo to strive to establish conditions necessary for the deployment of the UNMIK international peace mission and for the implementation of United Nation Security Council Resolution No 1244. He added that support for the international institutions was of key importance in resolving the crisis.

In response to a press question on the violence accompanying the demonstrations in Tibet, Dr Türk said that violence was no way to reach settlements. “I hope that, in the process of resolving this issue, violence will give way to a peaceful resolution of the problem and that the process will take full account of the autonomy and cultural specificities of Tibet,” said the President.

On the latest developments in the Republic of Macedonia, the President commented that the country was going through a particular political discussion process which marked its present stage of political development. He added that everything possible should be done to assist the successful continuation of the Republic of Macedonia’s accession to the EU.
