Conversations of President Türk at the 17th Summit of Central European Countries

The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Danilo Türk, meets with the President of the United States, Barack Obama (photo: Stanko Gruden/STA)At the 17th Summit of Central European Countries, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Danilo Türk, attended bilateral meetings with the acting President of the Republic of Moldova, Dr Marian Lupu, and the President of the Republic of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga.

Last night, President Türk attended a working dinner with the presidents of Central and Eastern European countries, which was also attended by the President of the United States, Barack Obama.

President Lupu informed President Türk about the current situation in the area of Pridnestrovie and about preparations for discussions on solving this issue, which will take place in June. President Türk stressed that the EU hoped for an expeditious solution of this issue and called for innovative solutions for the regulation of Pridnestrovie’s status.

President Jahjaga informed President Türk about Kosovo’s current political priorities and activities in the field of cooperation with the EU. The significance of the European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo, EULEX Kosovo, and the need for the earliest possible appointment of a new mission leader were stressed. President Türk invited the Kosovo President to make a working visit to the Republic of Slovenia.

The central topics of conversation were strengthening democracy in Europe and democratic changes in the Arab world. The speakers stressed the significance of further enlargement of the EU and the NATO alliance to areas of Southeast Europe, and the European perspective of countries who have been cooperating with the EU within the framework of the Eastern Partnership.

The attendees mentioned various aspects of cooperation with the Arab countries, issues of strengthening economic relations and helping North African countries, and the significance of the transition experience in Central and Eastern Europe for current changes in the Arab world.
