Statement by Slovenian President Dr Danilo Türk on the occasion of Holocaust Remembrance Day

Ljubljana, 27.1.2009  |  statement

This year, all over the world, we mark 64 years since the liberation of the largest concentration camp in the south of Poland. The suffering of millions of Jews and many others who were victims of Nazi and fascist violence in extermination camps must never, and will never, be forgotten. Many Slovenes, too, were among the victims. These days, we remember their suffering with deep respect.

On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we reflect on the atrocities committed during World War II. In the past, the world also saw acts of genocide being committed here, in Europe, near us. Let 27 January every year remind us of our common duty to prevent such atrocities from recurring in the future.
