Response of the French Prime Minister to the initiative of the President of the Republic of Slovenia in relation to conditions in Darfur
Ljubljana, 02/23/2006 | press release
French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin is responding to President Drnovšek’s initiative in relation to the situation in Darfur, through which the latter wished to achieve a mobilisation of the international community to find a way out of this crisis. France is strongly committed in the diplomatic sense and is endeavouring to contribute to the international efforts to resolve the situation in Darfur. In the humanitarian sphere, together with its European partners, it has contributed a great deal to help people in situations of distress. In order to ensure greater security in this area, France has already deployed a number of military units based in Chad along the Sudanese border. In the medium-term we must study, together with the African Union, the possibilities of transforming the peacekeeping mission of the African Union into a United Nations mission.
