President Drnovšek receives UK Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott

The President of the Republic, Dr Janez Drnovšek, today received the Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Mr John Prescott. Dr Drnovšek and Mr Prescott exchanged views on the current situation in the European Union and on Dr Drnovšek’s proposal for the solution of the status of Kosovo.
President Drnovšek explained his opinion regarding the European Constitutional Treaty, stating that the ratification process in the Member States should continue and then return to the two countries that had rejected it.
Dr Drnovšek and Mr Prescott agreed that the opening of European Union negotiations with Croatia and Turkey was a good decision and that the European Union also needed the Constitutional Treaty as part of further enlargement. They also concurred that the amendments to the Financial Perspective 2007-2013 were indispensable. Dr Drnovšek stressed the necessity of CAP reform, stating that the proper steps should indeed be prepared during the current Financial Perspective. President Drnovšek also outlined to Mr Prescott his plan for the solution of the status of Kosovo.
