President Drnovšek in talks on South Eastern Europe

The President of the Republic of Slovenia Dr Janez Drnovšek is today participating in a discussion on South-Eastern Europe entitled “South-East Europe in Focus”. The debate is to be chaired by the editor of the well known magazine France Intere, Dominique Bromberger. Other participants include the Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski, the Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase and other notable figures from the region.
President Drnovšek's view is that the positive shifts in the political and economic developments supported by the international community represent an important drive for the SEE countries to continue the economic and political reforms with ever greater determination. In order to achieve lasting political and economic stability, the assistance of the international community must be guaranteed also in the future – regardless of the other challenges it faces.
According to President Drnovšek, the integration of SEE countries into European economic, political and security organisations is the best guarantee of regional stability and any real prospects of development. President Drnovšek also believes that as a future EU member Slovenia can play an important role in consolidating the region with which it has developed intensive cooperation, especially in the economy. Slovenia wants its neighbouring regions to be stable and enjoy good prospects. This is why it advocates the membership of the countries from the region in CEFTA (Central European Free Trade Agreement), which offers a framework in which countries can successfully prepare for their adoption of EU standards.
