The President receives the Secretary General of the Arab League
Ljubljana, 01/04/2007 | press release
The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Janez Drnovšek, today received the Secretary General of the Arab League, Amre Moussa. Mr Moussa informed President Drnovšek of his organisation’s activities, particular in reference to several of what are currently the most severe crises of the modern world.
According to the Secretary General Amre Moussa, the core issue of the Middle East conflict is the unsolved Palestinian question, which foreign mediation has failed to provide positive solution to date. However, he said he expected that the European Union could have a decisive impact on the resolution process for the Middle East conflict and contribute to reaching a settlement there. Mr Moussa assessed the situation in Iraq as very bad and expressed his fear that there was a real risk of the instability and severe inter-religious and international conflicts spreading across the whole region, first of all to Lebanon.
In conversation with President Drnovšek, Mr Moussa outlined the background of conflicts in the Horn of Africa, Somalia, the humanitarian catastrophe in Darfur, the deterioration of the debate on nuclear potentials in the wider region and a number of other issues facing by the Arab League.
President Drnovšek expressed his thanks for a precise analysis of issues and his belief that the European Union could, if it becomes more united and bases its politics on high moral standards, meet the expectations and play an active role in solving Middle East issues.
