Click to enlargeThe President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Janez Drnovšek, today met the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Mrs Lydia Polfer, who is on a working visit to Slovenia on the invitation of the Foreign Minister Rupel.

President Drnovšek and Mrs Polfer agreed that Slovenia's entry into the EU and NATO would further deepen the already positive relations between the two countries. Mrs Polfer confirmed Luxembourg's full support for Slovenia’s joining these organisations. She said that Luxembourg would be glad to see friendly countries such as Slovenia at its side in the European Union and NATO. President Drnovšek and Mrs Polfer went on to condemn the murder of the Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjić, and conveyed their hope that democratic reforms in Serbia would continue in the direction set by the deceased prime minister.

President Drnovšek and Mrs Polfer exchanged views on the current international situation that has emerged with the search for a solution to the Iraqi crisis. They stressed the importance of disarming Iraq, and stated their belief that the UN Security Council was the most appropriate forum for resolving this issue. At the same time, President Drnovšek emphasised that it was in the interest of the international community as a whole that the most important actors harmonised their positions.
