President of Slovenia Dr. Janez Drnovšek today received the President of the European Parliament, Dr. Josep Borrell Fontelles.
The two discussed the future of the European Union, the issue of further enlargement and also cultural and civilisational aspects of Europe. President Borrell was interested in President Drnovšek’s views regarding the region of South Eastern Europe, and especially regarding Kosovo and Montenegro.
President Drnovšek stated that Kosovo was de facto sovereign, and presented to his guest his plan for Kosovo. As for Montenegro, he said that the Belgrade Agreement envisaged the holding of a referendum on independence, and that this would undoubtedly take place in the near future. He also familiarised his guest with the Montenegrin leadership’s proposal for a Union of the Independent States of Serbia and Montenegro. President Borrell was also interested in the initiative to resolve the Darfur question. President Drnovšek pointed out that there was a need for more determined diplomatic action, since the international community was operating under a large time lag, while people were suffering and dying. President Borrell welcomed the initiative, and stated that especially for a small country such as Slovenia, it was highly significant that it had concrete projects with which it was drawing attention to problems in the world and also helping to resolve them.
