Liberation movements JEM and SLA/M in Slovenia

Ljubljana, 05/29/2006  |  press release

Tomorrow, Tuesday 30 May 2006, President Dr Janez Drnovšek will meet with the delegations of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and a fraction of the Sudan Liberation Army/Movement (SLA/M). These two liberation movements were not signatories to the Peace Agreement for Darfur concluded on 5 May 2006 in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. The two delegations will be headed by their leaders and chief negotiators, Ibrahim Khalil (JEM) and Abdul Wahid Mohammed al-Nur (SLA/M).
The visit is connected with the appeal made by President Drnovšek prior to the final negotiations in the Nigerian capital, when he called upon all the negotiating parties and influential international players to strive, in the interests of peace and stability and, above all, for the sake of the suffering people of Darfur, to find a solution that would be acceptable to all, ending the humanitarian and human tragedy in this region of Western Sudan that has been going on for three years. On 5 May 2006, following considerable effort by the international community, the Sudanese government and a fraction of SLA/M led by Minni Arcua Minnawi signed the Peace Agreement in Abuja. The remaining two negotiating groups, whose delegations will meet with President Drnovšek, refused to sign the Agreement and the international community set a final deadline of 31 May 2006 for them to sign it.
The talks between President Drnovšek and the two delegations of the liberation movements will focus on the humanitarian and political aspects of the crisis in Darfur and the critical aspects of the Peace Agreement for Darfur. Through open dialogue, President Drnovšek and his visitors will try to identify a solution that would make it possible for both movements to accept the Peace Agreement for Darfur and, through direct engagement, influence the settling of the political, security and humanitarian situation in both Darfur and Sudan.
