President Drnovšek at the forum "Community of Democratic Choice" in Ukraine

The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Janez Drnovšek, today attended the forum “Community of Democratic Choice” held in Kiev.
The initiative for the forum on the democratisation of the Baltic-Black Sea-Caspian region was presented jointly by Ukraine’s President Victor Yushchenko and Georgia’s President Mikhael Saakashvili in August this year. The purpose of the Ukrainian-Georgian initiative is to encourage transformation processes that will facilitate this region's full integration into Europe and the Euro-Atlantic Community. In addition to President Drnovšek, the forum was attended by the presidents of Estonia, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldavia and Romania.
In his speech at the forum, President Drnovšek stressed the importance of the European perspective, which unites all countries, and then went on to add that enlargement of the European Union should not stop at the existing borders. The so-called enlargement fatigue that set in after the last enlargement must not stop a process that provides security and progress to all states and nations that wish to enhance their integration with the European Union. In this connection, President Drnovšek stressed that the Member States of the European Union should continue the process of ratification of the European Constitutional Treaty and agree on the next Financial Perspective, and added that harmony should be found between economic reform and social security.
Moreover, Dr Drnovšek emphasised that the strengthening of European integration and enlargement of the European Union must also eliminate the danger of the emergence of two Europes: one rich, with a high level of safety and quality of life; and the other with inadequate safety and an inferior quality of life.
