Official Visit by the President of the Republic to Romania

Dr Drnovšek is currently on an official visit to Bucharest, where today he met with the President of Romania, Traian Basescu, the President of the Senate, Nicolai Vacaroiu, and the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Adrian Nastase. The main topic of their discussion was the process of Romania’s accession to the European Union and the support Romania hoped to receive from Slovenia on this path.
President Drnovšek pointed out that a considerable part of this path towards integration into the Euro Atlantic structures had so far been jointly followed. The statesmen agreed that the doors of the European Union must remain open, particularly for the countries bordering Slovenia and Romania. President Drnovšek also stated that Slovenia supported the European perspective in the case of the Western Balkan countries as well, and that this perspective would also contribute to the solution of problems such as the issues of Pridnestrje and Kosovo.
During the discussion, President Drnovšek mentioned that Romania was an important partner to Slovenia in all areas, not only in the economic domain. Moreover, cooperation possibilities are also available to both countries on a multi-lateral basis. Partners in the discussion agreed that improved connections between the countries, especially in air traffic between Ljubljana and Bucharest, would also be in the interest of a further developed bilateral cooperation. In addition, the Romanian side expressed interest in the possible opening of a diplomatic mission by Slovenia in Bucharest, which would assist in strengthening mutual economic links between the countries.
The visit will continue tomorrow when President Drnovšek visits the Town Hall in Bucharest and meets Mayor Adrieano Videanu. Dr Drnovšek will also visit the old winter resort Siania, where a meeting is foreseen with the Prime Minister of Romania, Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, and the Mayor of Sinaia, Vlad Gheorghe Oprea.
