Ljubljana, 01/16/2007 | press release
The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Janez Drnovšek, today received the Letter of Credence from the Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania, Mr Giedrius
Poudžiunas.
The Lithuanian Ambassador told Dr Drnovšek that Lithuania assessed the relations between the two countries as very good, however, their wish is to further strengthen them, in particular in the economic field where trade in goods is still very low. Ambassador Giedrius Poudžiunas congratulated Dr Janez Drnovšek on Slovenia's success in becoming the first new Member State to join the Economic and Monetary Union.
During the conversation with President Drnovšek, the Ambassador also mentioned that Lithuania would open an office in Ljubljana, which would gradually develop into an embassy.
The President of the Republic, Dr Janez Drnovšek, defined the relations between the two countries as friendly. He said both countries shared the same interests, goals and expressed the opinion that their co-operation as well as the European integration process could be further strengthened. He also pointed out that the commitment to stability was the only guarantee for a safe and peaceful Europe. President Drnovšek added that co-operation between the Member States of the European Union was sometimes difficult because of the large number of Member States, but was necessary as there was no other alternative. In his opinion, the European Union could strengthen co-operation in the field of environmental protection and social justice, it could take over the leading role in these fields and propose solutions.
At the end of the meeting, President Drnovšek wished Ambassador Poudžiunas the best of success in his work and said he was convinced that co-operation in the European Union would be strengthened.
