Ljubljana, 06/08/2004  |  press release

Click to enlargeThis morning at the offices of the American Embassy the Slovenian President, Dr. Janez Drnovšek, signed the book of condolence opened on the death of former American President Ronald Reagan.

Click to enlargeIn his telegram of condolence on the death of former American President Ronald Reagan, which President Drnovšek sent today to American President George W. Bush, he wrote that the “Slovenian nation would remember Reagan for his enhanced dialogue with the president of the then Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, which had a major influence on global and primarily European politics. The period of his presidency saw the emergence in Central and Eastern Europe of democratic opposition movements whose efforts led ultimately to the collapse of the bipolar division of the world. With his words “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” which he said on his visit to Berlin in 1987, President Reagan did indeed herald the course of events which changed Central and Eastern Europe down to their very foundations.” President Drnovšek expressed his sincere condolences to President Bush and to the American people, and at the same time requested that the condolences of the Slovenian nation be passed on also to the Reagan family.
