President sends condolences upon the demise of the Palestinian President

Upon receiving news of the demise of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, Slovene President Janez Drnovšek extended sincere condolences to the Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority and the Palestinian people. In his letter President Drnovšek wrote that Yasser Arafat would be remembered as the symbol of the Palestinian fight and an exceptional leader who, together with the late Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, made a unique historical contribution to the peace process. Dr Drnovšek recalled his meetings with Yasser Arafat in Belgrade, Malta and Davos where he had the opportunity to learn in person of his vision for the future of the Palestinian people and exchange opinions on the path to lasting and just peace.
Dr Drnovšek ended by expressing his belief that unity is essential in this difficult time for the Palestinian people, and his hope to achieve a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.
