Dr. Drnovšek meets the President of Peru
Davos (Switzerland) , 01/25/2003 | press release
In Davos, Switzerland, President Drnovšek today held a meeting with the President of Peru, Alejandro Toledo. President Drnovšek expressed his satisfaction that despite the great geographical distance the countries were taking advantage of the opportunity provided by multilateral meetings to maintain contacts at the highest level. Dr Drnovšek expressed an interest in expanding bilateral relations and invited the Peruvian President to visit Slovenia. Responding to President Toledo’s request, he also explained the current situation regarding Slovenia’s EU accession and that the signing of the Accession Treaty was anticipated for April of this year and official membership for 1 May 2004.
During the meeting, President Toledo emphasised the mutual ties between the two countries to which globalisation was a contributing factor. Slovenia is also of interest to Peru as a future EU member, which enjoys special consideration from Peru. It therefore follows that bilateral relations should be further developed, not only in the political and economic sphere but also in the cultural sphere. These mutual relations could also be used to define the broader themes that link the two countries. These include issues related to world security and the unequal distribution of the gains that globalisation generates. At the conclusion of their discussion, President Toledo invited President Drnovšek to visit Peru.
