Letter of the President of the Republic of Slovenia to famous politicians, writers and famous personalities from sports, music and film industry

Ljubljana, 01/08/2006  |  press release

President of the Republic of Slovenia Dr Janez Drnovšek sent a letter concerning the situation in Darfur to famous politicians, writers and famous personalities from sports, music and film industry. In his letter the President Dr Drnovšek wrote:

"The situation in Darfur is deteriorating dramatically. We in Slovenia are endeavouring to organise our share of humanitarian aid. In cooperation with our humanitarian organisations, we have set out to put up a camp for 10,000 people including all the necessary supplies of water, medicines, medical staff and education facilities for the children.

Nevertheless, there are reportedly 2 million refugees in and around Darfur. Our contribution, although sizeable for the small country that is Slovenia, is going to be but a droplet of water in this ocean of refugees. We must send a wake-up call to all of humanity, we must awaken their conscience. Let us only remember how that conscience was fomented a year ago as we watched the tsunami disaster take place. The extent of the catastrophe in Darfur could be even greater. It is for this reason that I turn to you for help. Your name is well known to the world's public and you have the ability to attract attention and raise humanity's awareness about the disaster in Darfur.

Now is the time. Tomorrow will be too late.

Please join us in Slovenia's modest aid campaign and help make of it not just a drop of water in the sea but rather the sea itself. We can save thousands, perhaps millions of people.

I have brought the disaster in Darfur to the attention of the Secretary General of the United Nations and the world's leading politicians. I demanded urgent action by the UN and other international organisations. Let them hear your call, too. May the international community no longer stand by in speechless apathy as children and many innocent people die, while all they want is to live in peace in this world just as we do... It is time to act.

I shall keep you informed of our actions. Join us. Together we will make it."
