President Dr Drnovšek’s meeting with the Speaker of Polish Sejm and the Speaker of Polish Senate

At the conclusion of his official visit to Poland today, the President of the Republic of Slovenia Dr Janez Drnovšek met with the Speaker of the Polish Sejm Dr Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz and the Speaker of the Senate Dr Longin Pastusiak.
During the talks with the Speaker of Sejm Dr Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz, they paid special attention to discussions in connection with the ratification of the European Constitutional Treaty. In the opinion of the Polish counterparts, Slovenia is in a far better position, bearing in mind the fact that Poland decided for a referendum, which is not an easy task. The President and the Speaker also turned attention to the issue of UNO reform, in connection with which Poland believes the European Union should form joint positions, which would require coordination among Member States. President Dr Drnovšek expressed his belief that the proposals of Secretary-General Kofi Annan represent a viable minimum and spoke in favour of an enhanced presence of the East European Group, which has enabled those countries to gain political momentum. The speakers also exchanged views on EU enlargement in the coming years, taking into account the situation in Southeast Europe and the Western Balkans. In connection with this, President Dr Drnovšek was of the opinion that those countries should have European prospects.
Discussions with the Speaker of the Senate Dr Longin Pastusiak stressed outstanding relations between the two countries, a joint interest in the adoption and ratification of the European Constitutional Treaty, and a further enhancement of the European Union’s importance in the world. President Dr Drnovšek, prompted by his counterpart, explained the situation in the countries of the Western Balkans and reiterated the importance of European prospects in those countries . The speakers exchanged opinions on regional partnership and confirmed the appropriateness of participation of all interested countries, giving them with an opportunity for cooperation with countries outside this region according to their respective interests.
