President Drnovšek proposes cooperation between Slovenia and Tibet

On his return from China, where he was one of the speakers at BFA 2006, the fifth annual conference of the Boao Forum for Asia, President Janez Drnovšek visited Lhasa, the capital of Tibet.
He met the leaders of this autonomous region, who briefed him on conditions in Tibet and explained that the Chinese government is investing a great deal in the preservation of Tibet’s cultural and religious heritage. They particularly emphasised China’s respect for religious activities and the freedom of religion. The representatives of the administration told him that in Tibet they live in harmony despite ethnic differences, while they also expressed their expectation that their standard of living will further improve. Per capita GDP last year was around US$ 1000, while this year it is set to grow by five percentage points.
President Drnovšek expressed his satisfaction at the Chinese government’s respect for ethnic minorities and cultural and religious differences. He welcomed the decision that in recent years has seen considerable funds invested in the restoration of the Potala Palace, a first-class cultural and religious monument of world importance. He expressed his satisfaction at the ever-increasing awareness of the importance of preserving the natural environment. ‘This is extremely important, not only here in Tibet, but throughout China,’ he said.
Dr Drnovšek also expressed his satisfaction at the rapid development of infrastructure, with a modern airport, roads, and a railway which is due to start operating soon. In conclusion, Dr Drnovšek explained that in Slovenia there is great interest in Tibet and proposed cooperation between Tibet and Slovenia in the sphere of culture.
During his visit to Lhasa, President Drnovšek visited Potala Palace, once the residence of the Dalai Lamas, including the last Dalai Lama. He also visited Jokhang Temple and walked along the Barkhor, the circular pilgrims’ path.
