Letter of the President of the Republic of Slovenia to the Secretary-General of the United Nations

Ljubljana, 01/08/2006  |  press release

President of the Republic of Slovenia Dr Janez Drnovšek sent a letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofi Annan. In his letter President Dr Drnovšek wrote:

"I am addressing you once again on the issue of the Darfur situation. It is getting worse and worse every day and as you have ascertained yourself, the UN personnel started to withdraw from the area. The situation is unbearable. Masses of children are dying. There is no water, they are lacking food. The Oxfam organization is fighting a hopeless fight in the humanitarian field, urgently calling for an immediate action. If it does not take place, a humanitarian catastrophe is imminent. Hundreds of thousands of people will die. The situation in the East Africa is critical any way. Eleven millions of people are directly threatened by the drought.

It is high time for the humanity to awaken. It is the time when the United Nations should awake. You got the mandate to act. Seize the opportunity. Convene an urgent session of the Security Council and give a motion for an immediate humanitarian intervention. After the genocides in Rwanda and in Bosnia and Herzegovina the international community said: Never again!

Let the international community act now. Let NATO be included, with its great transport capacities, to support humanitarian aid. Let NATO support the far too feeble forces of the African Union. Let them put and end to the senseless killing committed by the paramilitary Sudanese formations. Has not there been enough of natural catastrophes? Innocent peaceable people are being killed right before the eyes of the international community.

Mister Secretary General,
we are all responsible for what is going on. The history will be our judge. There will be no excuse to help us. We will be accused by millions of innocent victims. There is still time to react. Take it! We shall help you. I am sure that people from many countries will join the mass humanitarian action to rescuer Darfur."
