About the candidate for governor of the Bank of Slovenia and about his candidacy to run for the president
Murska Sobota, 01/17/2007 | statement
Today, at the end of his talks with representatives of the Association of Roma People of Slovenia and of the Murska Sobota Municipality, President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Janez Drnovšek, answered the questions concerning Mr Gaspari as a candidate for the governor of the Bank of Slovenia and his own candidacy for the president in the coming elections.
Do you expect that Mr Gaspari will get support in the National Assembly?
Dr Janez Drnovšek: Yes. It would be a great surprise if this would not happen. Over a longer period of time, I think eight years, Mr Gaspari was a succesful minister of finance; at present and during the past five years he has been governor at the Central Bank of Slovenia and it is only two days from now that we could hear much praise in favour of our financial system and the results achieved over the past period; in any case, he is surely among the most meritorious persons if not the first man of merit regarding the fact that Slovenia today has a sound monetary system and that it is the first among the new EU Member States to have adopted the common currency Euro. Consequently, and in this respect, it would really be very strange and indeed a strange signal to the slovene political scene as well as to the international community if the National Assembly failed to approve such a candidate.
The rumour runs that you have changed your mind and that you intend to run for the president in the coming elections. Is this true?
Dr Janez Drnovšek: Where did you hear that? I'm keen on hearing it myself, too.
It came from unofficial but reliable sources.
Dr Janez Drnovšek: Then I will go there and listen to them and in the end ask them if what they say is true.
