Letter of Prime Minister of Iceland to President Dr Drnovšek

President of the Republic of Slovenia Dr Janez Drnovšek received a letter of Prime Minister of Iceland Halldor Asgrimsson concerning the situation in Darfur:
"Thank you for your moving letter on the ongoing and intractable situation in the Sudanese province of Darfur. The situation in Darfur is indeed tragic and your efforts in highlighting the seriousness of the matter are truly admirable. I congratulate you also on your fruitful meeting with UN Secretary General Mr. Kofi Annan, and on the worldwide attention, which your initiative received world-wide.
In order to restore order in Darfur, the conflicting parties will need to lay down arms and return to the negotiating table. I have been reassured that the UN Security Council is fully seized of this matter, and is indeed looking at ways and means of improving the situation, including by strengthening the much needed peace operations on the ground. At the same time I share with you the sense of urgency, which the extreme suffering of many thousands of civilians demands.
Finding ways to secure peace and stability in Darfur must remain a high priority for the international community. Your initiative has surely contributed to that end. I would like to thank you for the honour you do us in sharing your concerns with Iceland."
