President Drnovšek meets Pat Cox, the President of the European Parliament
Ljubljana, 03/24/2003 | press release
The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Janez Drnovšek, today received Pat Cox, the President of the European Parliament, who is on a visit to Slovenia. Mr Cox congratulated President Drnovšek on the outstanding success in Sunday's double referendum, and acknowledged Slovenia's successful preparation for entry into the European Union over the past few years. President Drnovšek expressed his thanks for the congratulations and said that yesterday's outcomes had crowned Slovenia’s decade of endeavours and negotiations.
Mr Cox furthermore believed that Slovenia – as a new member of the European Union –would assume an active role in shaping the EU’s opinions and policies concerning the situation in South-Eastern Europe. Dr Drnovšek and Mr Cox exchanged views on the Iraqi crisis and on the consequences that the differences between prominent EU members on how to resolve the crisis might have on the future of the European Union. Dr Drnovšek and Mr Cox agreed that today's Europe was a Europe of solidarity and cooperation, and not a Europe for testing strength in political and other areas.
