The President of the Republic, Dr Janez Drnovšek, today attended the opening of the high-level plenary meeting of the 60th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. Dr Sathirathai presented the experience of his country in the efforts to eradicate poverty in the Thai rural areas. They agreed that an important period lies ahead of the UN when its operations would have to be effectively harmonised with the declarations adopted and commitments undertaken. The excellent bilateral relations between Slovenia and Thailand were confirmed during the discussion, and Dr Drnovšek and Dr Sathirathai expressed their readiness to further strengthen ties between the two countries in various fields.
