President Drnovšek receives Chief of Defence of Turkey, General Hilmi Özkök

The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Janez Drnovšek, today received the Chief of Defence of Turkey, General Hilmi Özkök. Dr Drnovšek and General Özkök stressed the positive co-operation between Slovenian and Turkish armed forces, with General Özkök praising the quality of Slovenian armed forces with respect to its size.
They also exchanged views on the situation in the Western Balkans and the Middle East, concurring in their opinion that it was important to assure peace and stability in these regions. Dr Drnovšek also said that Slovenia welcomed the opening of negotiations for Turkey’s entry into the European Union, and went on to emphasise that membership would be beneficial to both the European Union and Turkey.
