President of the Republic assessing Slovenia today

Vrhnika, 10/26/2006  |  statement

President of the Republic Dr. Janez Drnovšek, after visiting Vrhnika primary school today, when he planted the 33rd tree in their arboretum, also answered journalists questions on an assessment of Slovenia’s situation:

Mr President, 15 years have passed since the departure of the last soldier of the former Yugoslav army from Slovenia. How do you assess the position of Slovenia today, after this transitional path, where it could be in terms of potential, where in your opinion it is?

Dr. Janez Drnovšek: "I would almost say that, in the given circumstances, we have done the maximum in these fifteen years. Fifteen years ago, and I know because I was myself an actor in the then events, our expectations were not such, or they were considerably more modest. At that time we hoped to be able to survive as an independent state in difficult circumstances, and we succeeded in this. We have become a fairly distinguished member of the European Union. So we can be satisfied from that point of view. Of course, this is a period that is now behind us, which provides a basis, and I think that we should no longer dwell on the past, but go forward, where we must build something more. We must never be satisfied and, of course, there is still much to do in our country and in our society, for it to be fairer, for our development to be faster, for entrepreneurship, innovativeness to develop, for there to be fewer bureaucratic hurdles, for us to be less concerned with ourselves."
