President Drnovšek attends 58th session of UN General Assembly

Ljubljana, 09/19/2003  |  press release

The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Janez Drnovšek, will next week attend in New York the 58th session of he UN General Assembly, which began on 16 September. On Friday 26 September, at 10 a.m. local time, the President will deliver a speech within the context of the general discussions.

In addition to Dr Drnovšek, the Slovenian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Dimitrij Rupel, will also attend this session of the Assembly. The agenda currently has 165 items to be discussed primarily by the main committees of the Assembly, namely the committees covering issues related to security and disarmament, economic and social, human rights, decolonalisation and peace operation, financial and budgetary, and international law. On 22 September, a special session of the General Assembly, focusing on HIV/AIDS, will be held.

Slovenia has been active in the UN for over a decade; the country became a member of the organisation, which numbers 191 member states, on 22 May 1992. Since being admitted as a member, and particularly when it functioned as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council during 1998 and 1999, Slovenia has actively endeavoured to support the UN in its efforts to adapt to the new opportunities and challenges ushered in by the new millennium. In this respect, Slovenia espouses the efforts of the UN Secretary General, Mr Kofi Annan, to reform the organisation. By adopting the Millennium Declaration in 2000, the heads of member states and governments ambitiously outlined the main guidelines for the work of the UN and its place and role in the contemporary international community. Ensuring the attainment of the Millennium Declaration's goals in all areas of UN activities remains a priority task and challenge for the future development of the organisation.
