Ljubljana, 09/14/2006 | press release
The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Janez Drnovšek, today received the Executive Director of the World Food Programme, Mr James T. Morris. Mr Morris thanked Slovenia for its contribution to the World Food Programme and commended the Slovenian staff as well as expressed his hope that Slovenia will also in the future remain one of the 90 donor countries.
Dr Drnovšek and Mr Morris agreed that more had to be done to eradicate hunger since 840 million people continue to be afflicted despite the fact that there is enough food in the world for all. Mr Morris is convinced that a few additional billions of dollars would almost eradicate hunger among children. He said that the programme in Sudan was their biggest with 2,200 staff members providing assistance to the local population. Mr Morris went on to express his great support for the endeavours of the Slovenian President to resolve the crisis in Darfur. He commended the success of Dr Drnovšek’s campaign to raise aid for Darfur. According to Mr Morris, the World Food Programme is prepared to help Dr Drnovšek in his efforts aimed at resolving the situation, at long-term reconstruction and stability in this part of Sudan.
Dr Drnovšek thanked his guest for support and wished him every success in his mission.
