LORD CHANCELLOR LORD IRVINE OF LAIRG CALLS ON PRESIDENT KUCAN

Ljubljana, 17 September 2002

The President of the Republic, Milan Kučan, received a high representative of the British Government today, the Lord Chancellor Lord Irvine of Lairg, speaking about Slovenia’s expectations prior to the NATO summit in Prague and the EU Summit in Copenhagen, as well as about Slovenia’s preparation for life as a member of both structures. The High Guest was particularly interested in the President’s expectations of the outcome of possible referenda on Slovenia’s EU and NATO accession. The Lord Chancellor expressed great admiration for the achievements of independent Slovenia, particularly in the economic field, as well as for the successful preparation for EU and NATO accession.

President Kučan and the Lord Chancellor also exchanged views on the role of the UN in resolving the current international situation with regard to Iraq. The President emphasised particularly the congruence of the interests of the world’s superpowers, the UN and Slovenia, aimed at strngthening the UN’s authority through the implementation of adopted resolutions. It is very important in the President’s opinion for the United Nations to remain the central point of dialogue and agreement in international politics in this time of globalisation.
