The President of the Republic, Milan Kucan, today received Nicole Fontaine, President of the European Parliament. In the course of the discussion the President emphasised that the current government crisis will not affect Slovenia's strategic orientation towards EU accession at the earliest possible date. This orientation remains unchanged. The parliamentary parties' agreement on priority adoption of EU-related legislation is also a guarantee to this effect.

President Fontaine ensured the President that during her short stay in Slovenia she became convinced that Slovenia is a good candidate for EU membership. According to the European Parliament's estimates, the first new members are to accede by the year 2004, meaning that they would already participate in the elections into a new European Parliament.
